Controller thumbsticks are known to drift over time. This is due to the wear on the carbon of the potentiometers on the X and Y axis, and an inability to stay consistent in the center resistance readings, causing the sticks to not stay centered when left alone.

This in turn causes the stick to "drift" as if it was being held in a direction.
Replacing the thumbstick for a new one is only half of the repair - most of the time the new thumbstick will not be quite the same resistance range or center value as the controller as it came out of the factory and will have an offset center position.
The fix for this is super easy and requires adding an additional potentiometer to the thumbstick potentiometer and tuning the new potentiometer until the stick is perfectly center.
Visit gamepad-tester.com and connect your controller to the computer via USB cable to have a great way to visually align your thumbsticks.
Requires soldering to the controller using a soldering iron, and calibrating with the included screwdriver.

Xbox Original / One / Series / Elite / 360
PlayStation 1/2/3/4/5 (excluding PS3 controllers using 4 pin potentiometers)
